PLC & Automation Engineer

Warwick | £45,000 – £50,000 | Permanent

Job Purpose

The PLC & Automation Engineer plays a key role in delivering reliable and well-integrated machine control systems, focusing on automation performance, commissioning, and technical support rather than pure software development. This role bridges control philosophy and real-world machine operation.

Key Responsibilities

As a PLC & Automation Engineer, you will support the delivery and performance of automation systems across machinery and customer installations.

  • Configure, adapt, and support PLC-based control systems (Siemens preferred)
  • Work with existing PLC programs, making modifications and improvements where required
  • Support commissioning, testing, and system validation activities
  • Configure and support industrial drives, automation hardware, and tension control systems (e.g. Magpower or similar)
  • Diagnose and resolve automation and control-related faults, both in-house and on customer sites
  • Interpret electrical schematics and control documentation to support system behaviour

The PLC & Automation Engineer will work closely with electrical design engineers, service engineers, and customers to ensure systems operate reliably in production environments.

  • Provide technical support during breakdowns, upgrades, and performance improvements
  • Support service teams during complex fault conditions or peak workloads
  • Liaise with suppliers on automation components and system integration topics
  • Communicate system functionality clearly with internal teams and customers

Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Highly Desirable

  • Engineering apprenticeship or Level 3 qualification in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or Mechatronics
  • Practical experience working with PLC-controlled automation systems
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills within industrial control environments
  • Understanding of drives, automation hardware, and machine control systems

Desirable (Training Can Be Provided)

  • Siemens PLC exposure (configuration, modification, commissioning rather than full software ownership)
  • Experience with tension control systems
  • Knowledge of machinery safety standards
  • Experience within machinery, material processing, or special-purpose equipment

The PLC & Automation Engineer position is a permanent role based in Warwick, offering a salary of £45,000–£50,000 depending on experience.
