Purpose of the Role

To provide “clean sheet” concept packaging, production drawings, and detailed design solutions compatible with Design Studio and Vehicle Engineering requirements in accordance with the Project timing and Spec Book targets.

Lead and promote the evolution of efficient design philosophy. Specifically promote a weight and package awareness of all design concepts.

Principal Accountabilities

  •      Report to Principal Design Engineers for Technical leadership during concept phase of projects.
  •      Report to Line/ Attribute manager in terms of operation.
  •      In the latter stages of the project design phase work within the wider Product Development Design Engineering team taking guidance from and supporting other functional areas as required.
  •      Produce component packaging and concept studies including compatibility with latest styling direction.
  •      Chassis, Powertrain, interior, electrical, BIW and body systems design, packaging, and detailing,(produce manufacturing drawings) from prototype to production, including supporting all Mule car design and development activity.
  •      Reconcile manufacturing and assembly feasibility with aerodynamics, styling and component or system specifications.
  •      Stand-alone mechanical system design projects to fulfil specific future engineering or commercial requirements.
  •      Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, cost, and weight.
  •      Check the content of designs for release against the specification, the data integrity of CAD geometry and resolution of digital build concerns prior to sign-off.
  •      Support activities for weight-down, cost-down, build concern resolution and process-improvement.
  •      Communicate progress and critical issues to the Principal Design Engineers and Chief Engineer.
  •      Verify legislative compliance through CAD analysis and physical assessments.

Experience Required

  •      Education to Degree level preferred
  •      Relevant Automotive experience of high-end or niche vehicles preferred.
  •      Proficient in solid modelling and surfacing using CATIA V5
  •      Ability to support design decisions with appropriate hand calculations
  •      Ability to create full detailed design drawings in accordance with BS 8888, including geometric tolerancing.(GD&T)
  •      Great attention-to-detail and an attitude to produce ‘right first time’ quality work
  •      Good understanding of mechanical design requirements for typical automotive applications e.g., fastening systems, sealing solutions, manufacturing techniques.
  •      Understanding of DFMEA and risk assessment techniques in automotive environment
  •      Experience of composite component & body pressing design
  •      Knowledge of Legislative and Passive Safety requirements to support vehicle design.
  •      Good broad knowledge of all Vehicle Systems and components with an understanding of Vehicle Integration.
